KANSAS FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIAL
REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN HEROES
Dedicated in June of 2002, the Kansas Fallen Firefighters Memorial is located just south of the Kansas Firefighters Museum in Wichita. The museum and memorial are situated on the northwest corner of Lincoln Park next door to a modern fire station. The memorial courtyard consists of several different areas including a life-sized bronze statue of a firefighter discovering the helmet of a fallen comrade, engraved bricks, a memorial wall and meditation area. In 2025, by order of the Governor Laura Kelly, the Kansas Fallen Firefighters Memorial became the "official" state memorial for Kansas firefighters who died in the line of duty.
FINAL CALL STATUE
KANSAS FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIAL WALL
Located behind the Final Call Statue, the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Wall is a winged, black granite wall with the names of firefighters who have died in the line of duty in Kansas. Their engraved names include their fire department and date of death. Engraved in the center sections of the wall are the poems “The Gentle Heroes” and “The Fireman’s Prayer”.
MEMORIAL COURTYARD
The life-sized bronze statue is the creation of Wichita artist, Dorothy Koelling. Facing Broadway Avenue, the Final Call Statue is mounted on a black granite pedestal with the face of the firefighter at eye level. A 50 foot flagpole saved from the demolition of the old WDF Fire Station 9 at Kellogg and Oliver is placed near the statue.
THE FIREMAN'S PRAYER
whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life Whatever be its age.
Help me to embrace a little child
Before it’s too late,
Or some older person
from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me,
To guard my neighbor
And protect his property.
And if according to Your will
I have to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting
hand My children and my wife.
